SHOSTAKOVICH FIFTH SYMPHONY – MALTA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Details

Producer: Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
Venue: Republic Hall
Date: 23 April 2018
Time: 20:00

Description

Winner of the 1st Prize in the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels at the age of 23,

Denis Kozhukhin has established himself as one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Kozhukhin’s performances have been praised by critics as “spellbinding”, “imperious”, and “mesmerizing”.

Denis Kozhukhin comes to Malta for the first time and presents a very poetic piano concerto, a kind of musical diary called "Travel Notebook" by Maltese composer Alexey Shor.

As a counterbalance to this intimate and at the same time full-bodied work, the Symphony no. 5 by Dmitri Shostakovich was put on the program.Shostakovich wrote his Fifth Symphony – probably his most well-known – at a critical point in his career: it was the first time (and not the last) he faced Stalin’s displeasure, which could be both career- and life-threatening.
